Il termine nasce dall'unione tra Oxford e Cambridge, le due università più antiche e prestigiose d'Inghilterra (XIII secolo), entrambe altamente selettive. Gli studenti sono divisi in college nei quali risiedono e dove si svolgono anche parte delle lezioni. I più antichi sono aperti al pubblico nei periodi di vacanza.
