bekommen
The German verb bekommen meaning to get is a false friend easily confused with the English to become. So the phrase Was hast du zum Geburtstag geschenkt bekommen? means What did you get for your birthday?
The English to become or to get in the sense of to change state is translated by werden. Es ist plötzlich dunkel geworden could be translated as It's become dark all of a sudden.
