Built between 1881 and 1894, the Reichstag served as the parliament of the German Empire. It was set on fire under suspicious circumstances in 1933, an event used by Hitler as an excuse to suspend human rights. During the Third Reich it hosted Nazi propaganda presentations and served as a gynaecological ward during the war. After reunification, the building was rebuilt to incorporate a huge glass dome. It has been the seat of the German parliament again since 1999.
